A major exhibition in November 2011 by two textile artists needed a site to promote the event. Given the relatively small volume of content to be displayed, it was decided that this site could be centred on a single page design.

While the site is only a single page, it uses the jQuery javascript library to create the illusion of multiple pages with near instant page switch.

Some of the features of this site include:

Bing map integration to show the location of the exhibition

jQuery javascript library to create the page switching effect

Image galleries to highlight examples of work that will be on display

Methods of contacting the artists

The site was kept purposefully simple to keep the focus on the content.

Mark Holden is a Fife based artist; he has been inspired by the West Sands as a favourite subject. He has established himself principally as a landscape artist, however other subjects have been explored too. He was influenced by the Scottish Colourists and Impressionist artists. He paints in Oils and likes to bring texture and movement into his work by using palette knife and brush work together. He was looking to revamp his site in order to sell prints online.

Solution

The main asset here are Mark’s artwork which is what the site needed to focus on. The simple design that was created was focussed on highlighting a selection of recent artwork on a continuous loop. By concentrating on the red in Mark’s logo and effective use of highlights, the site is given a luxurious feel.

A key focus was the ability to simply sell prints and cards with minimal investment in infrastructure. By using Paypal tools, it was relatively simple to tie artwork for sale with a shopping cart system that deals with all the hard lifting of a small e-commerce site.

The site is managed by the WordPress content management system which makes it easy for the client to maintain the site content. This is tied in with Google Analytics to provide tracking and statistics for the site.

Chris Christenson is a photographer based in Midlothian who specialises in wedding and event photography. Additionally he does studio and commercial work.

Christenson Photographers has had a web site for a number of years but it was felt that with competitors updating their web sites, it was time to revisit their web presences in order to remain at the cutting edge in this competitive sector.

Aesthetics were important in this brief. Wedding traffic depends strongly on a slick, professional looking site but without compromising the quality of the content. The use of high quality photography was essential due to the subject matter. Luckily Chris was able to supply a vast library of top notch images to use around the site and to create example galleries of previous work.

One of the two central purposes of the site is to provoke enquiries. As a result, a solid mechanism for soliciting and tracking responses to web lead generation was built into the site which allows the client to monitor ongoing progress with enquiries.

The second purpose is to display and sell prints to newlyweds and wedding guests. A password protected photo gallery was implemented that allows Chris to upload photos to the site and gives users the option to purchase images directly from the site. Being a small business with limited resources, there was little incentive to implement a full e-commerce operation so the Paypal shopping cart was implemented instead that fulfils the business’ need.

Voodoo Bar is a new entertainment venue in Edinburgh. As a result of new a new bar in a crowded marketing, it had a need for a web site cheaply and quickly but still easily maintainable.

esspeedee chose to implement the WordPress content management system and use a prebuilt template from the open source community in order to have the site ready for launch as soon as possible.

It was a requirement to be able to display photos from party nights at the bar on the site quickly and easily. With this in mind, an integration with the popular Flickr photo sharing service was chosen. Flickr allows the bar staff to easily upload photos which are replicated on the site.

The Voodoo Bar site is an excellent example of rapid site development.
